Hal Caswell

Hal Caswell is Professor of Mathematical Demography and Ecology, in the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics at the University of Amsterdam. He studies the demography of humans, plants, and (non-human) animals, and has extended formal demographic methods using matrix population models. His research interests include the formal demography of kinship, the evolution of life histories, the roles of stochasticity and heterogeneity in demography, models for health demography, the conservation demography of threatened species, and the sensitivity analysis of demographic models. Caswell received his PhD in Zoology from Michigan State University in 1974. He is an Emeritus Research Scholar at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and a Distinguished Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research.
