James Vaupel

James W. Vaupel has been Director of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research since it was founded in 1996. He is also Director of the Max-Planck Odense Center on the Biodemography of Aging, launched on 1 Jan. 2013. He is Professor of Demography at the University of Southern Denmark and at Duke University. His research interests include analysis of patterns of human mortality; analysis of patterns of mortality and fertility for species across the tree of life; modeling heterogeneous populations; mortality forecasting; public policies for aging populations; and mathematical demography. He studied mathematical statistics and then public policy at Harvard University. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. He was awarded the Taeuber and Sheps prizes of the Population Association of America and the Latsis Prize of the European Science Foundation.
