My research centers on understanding how social institutions play a role in the creation and maintenance of health disparities. Most of my work has focused on two social institutions wherein youth spend the bulk of their time: family and schools. The tremendous variation in both family and kinship patterns and educational experiences across the globe has taken my work into international terrain, focusing predominately on contemporary African contexts which have undergone extraordinary family and educational change in the last fifty years.

My research has been funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Development (NICHD), the Population Studies Center at the University of Michigan, the Penn State Africana Research Center, the Penn State Department of Sociology, the Penn State College of the Liberal Arts, and a fellowship from the American Association of University Women.
