This Special Collection includes ten articles and a summary from the 1st HMD Symposium on the topic of "Human Mortality over Age, Time, Sex, and Place" held in Rostock, Germany on 18-19 June 2004. After the symposium, participants were invited to submit their papers for peer review and the content was published in Volume 13 on 17 November 2005.
