Three Stata do files are provided. "ownchildren.do" allows computing age-specific male and female fertility rates. It uses household data as well as the female individual data file (for child survival estimates). "crisscross.do" computes age-specific male fertility rates with data on the number of children everborn in two successive surveys. It uses data from men's surveys. "dateoflastbirth.do" computes age-specific male fertility rates with data on the date of last birth in men's surveys. Each of these do files is used to compute rates for a single period. Sample data sets with the same structure and variable names as DHS data sets are provided. 1) OCHR71FL.dta and OCIR71FL.dta are provided for the ownchildren.do syntax. 2) CCMR01FL.dta and CCMR21FL.dta are provided for the crisscross.do syntax. 3) DLMR01FL.dta is provided for the dateoflastbirth.do syntax. Full data sets from Demographic and Health surveys are available from https://dhsprogram.com/. Users need to register first and provide a brief description of the study to obtain authorization for one or several countries (https://dhsprogram.com/data/new-user-registration.cfm). Once the request has been approved, users can download the data files from https://dhsprogram.com/data/available-datasets.cfm. The zipped files are available in various formats (SAS, Stata, SPSS, Flat Ascii). 1) For the date-of-last-birth method, the Men's recode data is needed. For instance, for the 2000 Rwanda survey, the file is RWMR41FL.dta. 2) For the crisscross method, the Men's recode data is needed for two successive surveys. For instance, for the 2000 and 2005 Rwanda surveys, the files are RWMR41FL.dta and RWMR53FL.dta. 3) For the own-children method, one needs both the household recode data file, and the women's recode data file. For instance, for the 2005 Rwanda surveys, the files are RWHR53FL.dta and RWIR53FL.dta.
