Holly E. Reed

HOLLY E. REED is Professor of Sociology at Queens College, City University of New York (CUNY). Professor Reed is also a doctoral faculty member in Sociology at The CUNY Graduate Center, an affiliated faculty member of the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy, and an associate of the CUNY Institute for Demographic Research. At CUNY, she teaches demography and demographic methods for both MA and PhD students, and statistics and research methods for undergraduates. Professor Reed also previously served as director and co-director of the MA Program in Data Analytics and Applied Social Research and as Associate Chair of the Sociology Department at Queens College.

For nearly 25 years, Professor Reed has been a researcher in the field of demography and sociology, specifically focused on the areas of human migration, the demographic transition, and socioeconomic development. Geographically, her research is concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa and the United States, and linkages between those regions. Professor Reed has published articles in journals such as Demography, Sociological Forum, International Migration Review, Demographic Research, Health and Place, and African Population Studies. In addition to her expertise in demographic and policy research, Professor Reed has analyzed numerous large-scale social surveys from the U.S. and Africa using various statistical and demographic methods.

In 2019, Professor Reed co-organized and co-chaired a workshop on demographic research on forced migration at the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. She is currently co-editing a special issue of the Journal on Migration and Human Security, which includes papers from that workshop, which will be published in 2021 (co-edited with Ellen Percy Kraly, Colgate University). Professor Reed is a member of the Editorial Board of Migration and Society as Review Editor for Frontiers in Sociology and Frontiers in Human Dynamics, and serves as a member of the international advisory board of the Journal of Immigrant and Refugee Studies. She previously served as a program officer for the Committee on Population of the National Academies in Washington, DC, and holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Brown University, and an M.A. in Demography and B.S. in Foreign Service from Georgetown University.
