Jacques Vallin, demographer, PhD in economics (University of Paris Panthéon-Sorbonne), is Emeritus Research Director at INED (National Institute for Demographic Research in Paris) where he worked from 1965 to 2006. His research interests include population growth in developing countries, mortality and causes of death in developed countries, historical demography. He taught demography at the Institut d’études politique de Paris and in various universities. He published about 30 books and 200 articles in scientific journals or books. He was Population Council adviser in Tunisia and Algeria for several years. He headed the CEPED (French center on population and development). He took important part in the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP), of which he his Honorary President.
