Irene Barbiera

Irene Barbiera is currently research fellow at the Department of Statistical Sciences, University of Padova, Italy, where she works since 2015. She has been research fellow at the Central European University between 2011 and 2013. In 2007-2008 she has been research fellow at the Academy of Sciences of Vienna, in the frame of the Wittgenstein project entitled: Ethnic Identities in Early Medieval Europe. From 2007 she held courses on gender history and historical demography at the University of Padova.
Her research focuses on social history and population patters of the ancient and medieval world, applying paleodemographic methods and using written, osteological, bioarchaeological and epigraphic sources in an interdisciplinary manner. Her main research topics are: migration dynamics; the transformations of mortality regimes and living standards in the past; sex-ratio and gender roles in the ancient and medieval world in relation to matrimonial regimes and family structures.
