**** The Canadian Vital Statistics Death Database **** The Canadian Vital Statistics Death Database is a confidential microdata file, which is accessible only to researchers with approved projects and who have been sworn in as Òdeemed employeesÓ of Statistics Canada. Once the project is approved and the confidentiality agreement has been signed, researchers can access the data set in a Research Data Centre (RDC), a secure university setting. Various confidentiality rules are applied before any analytical report is released or published in order to prevent the disclosure of any information deemed confidential. For these particular reasons, we cannot provide an example with the ÒtrueÓ data used for producing the results presented in our article. **** Accessing the Canadian Vital Statistics Death Database **** Interested users must submit an application describing their research project in order to have access to this dataset. For more information on the application process, please visit the The Data Research Centres (RDC) Program website at http://rdc-cdr.ca. **** File: ÒRCodeDemographicResearch2950.rÓ **** R program used for generating the main results in the paper ÒInsight on ÒtypicalÓ longevity: An analysis of the modal lifespan by leading causes of death in CanadaÓ. In order for users to be able to run our program, we provide simulated death counts for two causes of death and one calendar year. A user with granted access to our confidential data set would simply replace the content of variables Òd1Ó and ÒeÓ (STEP 2 of the R program) with two arrays, each of dimensions 91 (ages) x 7 (number of causes of death) x 38 (number of calendar years). The first array corresponds to observed death counts and the second one to estimates of population exposure to the risk of dying.
