This zip file contains code to reproduce the results in the manuscript "Pragmatic tradition or romantic aspiration? The causes of impulsive marriage and early divorce among women in rural Malawi" These were written and meant to be run with Stata 12 or higher. 1. Data access Quantitative data used in this paper comes from the 2006 wave of the Malawi Longitudinal Study of Families and Health (MLSFH), formerly the Malawi Diffusion and Ideational Change Project (MDICP). Researchers can request access to the data by downloading the MLSFH data use agreement and sending their request to Hans-Peter Kohler. The form is available on this page: https://malawi.pop.upenn.edu/malawi-data-mlsfh The data for the qualitative portion of the project is not available in public use, as it has not been thoroughly anonymized. Three sample narratives are included (files: Story_N1, Story_Q10 and Story_T6). 2. Specific datasets used The analyses in this paper use the 2006 married respondents’ data (for most variables); the 2006 household roster data (for information on respondents’ children); as well as the general datakey for the MLSFH (for information on gender, region and to cross-check information on birth dates). 3. Code file Coding for this paper is available (file: Do-files Impulsive marriage.txt). They contain explanations of the steps of analysis, including cleaning data and selecting respondents, computing variables and running analyses and tests.
