******************************************************************************************************************Information about the data. *This Stata do file contains code to produce results for Coffey, 2019: The association betwen neonatal death and facility birth in regions of India. *Coffey, 2019 uses the birth recodes of the NFHS-4 and NFHS-3 (India's Demographic and Health Surveys). These two datasets are available from dhsprogram.com (go to Data, Download datasets, and search for "India"). Researchers must request access to the data through this website. Access to the data is provided free of charge within 2-3 days to researchers who submit a short summary of their research topic. Replicating an existing paper would be an accepted research topic. Users must agree not to share the data. *Coffey, 2019 uses the following variables from the NFHS-4 and NFHS-3 (variables have the same names in both datasets): v024 - Indian state v025 - urban/rural v005 - sampling weight v001 - PSU m15 - place of delivery v008 - CMC for date of interview b3 - CMC for child's month of birth b2 - child's year of birth b4 - sex of child bord - birth order of child v201 - number of children ever born to the child's mother b7 - child's age at death (in months) v011 - CMC for mother's month of birth v150 - mother's relationship to head of household v116 v119 v120 v121 v122 v123 v124 v125 v127 v149 v153 v149 - household asset ownership (see text of Coffey, 2019 for an enumeration of the assets) v133 - mother's education (in years) *Questionnaires and further documentation for these data are available from dhsprogram.com to researchers who request the data. Questionnaires and fact sheets containing summary statistics are also available from the International Institute of Population Sciences (IIPS) at http://rchiips.org/nfhs/nfhs4.shtml (NFHS-4) and http://rchiips.org/nfhs/nfhs3.shtml (NFHS-3). ****************************** ******************************Information about the code. *With the exception of the NNM computations for Table 1, which used the command syncmrates with Stata 15, the rest of the analysis was done with Stata 12. The code may not run on earlier versions of Stata. *The code provided computes the summary statistics used in Figure 1, which comprises four maps of India showing NNM and hospital delivery rates by state for 2005 and 2015. For this paper, Stata files (not included) were used to draw state borders, but in principle any map making software that draws borders for Indian states could be used to depict these summary statistics on a map. ****************************** ************************************************************************************
