The coefficients in Table 1 were produced using an R script (oRphanhood.R) and
version 4.0.4 of R.

Both figures were produced using Stata (version 13.0 or above):

The Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) data files used to produce Figure 1
of the paper are available from the DHS website to researchers who register
for dataset access:

     v013 - Five-year age group
     b5 - Child is alive?
     b8 - Child's age
     b16 - Child's line number in the household member file

The 1900 and 1910 United States and 2000 and 2010 Zambia sample census files
used to produce Figure 2 of the paper are available to registered users from

Figure 2 was produced using the following variables:
     country - Country
     year - Census year
     serial - Household number
     pernum - Household member number
     perwt - Individual weight
     sex - Sex
     age - Age in years
     momloc - Mother's pernum
     stepmom - (Natural mothers are coded 0)
     chborn - Children ever-born to women (N.B. +1 in the US census files)
     chsurv - Children still living (N.B. +1 in the US census files)
