READ ME: INSTRUCTIONS & VARIABLE DEFINITIONS Manuscript titled "Household Structure Across Childhood in Four Lower- And Middle-Income Countries" All analysis done in Stata (version 14) INSTRUCTIONS for setting up folders and downloads when using do files Setting up folders: 1) Open do-file titled "Master". 2) "cd" is your working directory; be sure to edit this path to end in the correct folder on your computer where your project is stored. 3) "global data" is where you will save the files from the "downloading files" section below; be sure to edit this path for your computer. Downloading files: 1) Register for UK Data Services (https://ukdataservice.ac.uk). 2) Request access to the following datasets: -Young Lives: an International Study of Childhood Poverty: Round 1, 2002 -Young Lives: an International Study of Childhood Poverty: Round 2, 2006 -Young Lives: an International Study of Childhood Poverty: Round 3, 2009 -Young Lives: an International Study of Childhood Poverty: Round 4, 2013-2014 -Young Lives: an International Study of Childhood Poverty: Round 5, 2016 -Young Lives: an International Study of Childhood Poverty: Rounds 1-5 Constructed Files, 2002-2016 ***The data access level is safeguarded and you will need to request depositor permission to justify your use of the data. 3) Download them to computer or harddrive; save them all in one folder with the name of this folder matching the final destination in "global data". DEFINITIONS Included in the download for each round is a data dictionary which outlines detailed definitions for all variables. Below, we have briefly defined the ones used from the dataset for our analysis. Documentation for creating new variables is included in the code. Variable definitions childid = ID of the index child yc = younger cohort in dataset (study has two cohorts; we used the younger one) relate* = familial relationship to the index child* Round 4: retaler4 Round 5: relater5 ID* = ID of the family member in question Round 4: memidr4 Round 5: memidr5 sex* = sex of the individual Round 4: memsexr4 Round 5: memsexr5 age* = age of individual Round 4: memager4 Round 5: memager5 edu* = educational level of individual in question Round 4: grader4 Round 5: grader5 typesite = living in rural or urban location (2 = rural; 1 = urban) wi = wealth index of child's family dadedu = level of education of father momedu = level of education of mother *varied by round; noted and recoded to match across the five rounds
