In order to obtain the CHARLS data, you need to create an account on the CHARLS website, sign the user agreement and provide personal information for review. After the CHARLS team reviews and approves your application, you can download all data from the website using the links above. 

## How many records and which variables were used in the analysis
In the end, 923 couples were included in the sample (923 men and 923 women), the variables used in the analysis include (* indicates wide card):

## A basic meta-description of these variables
- Variables drawn from the "life history datasets" include information on their residential histories, marriage histories, early-life health and socioeconomic status.
- Variables drawn from the "Harmonised dataset" are demographic, current socio-economic status and health status. 
- Variables drawn from the CHARLS 15 include information on individual saving, which is unavailable from the Harmonised dataset.
