Martin Werding

Prof. Martin Werding, born 1964, has held the Chair for Social Policy and Public Finance at the University of Bochum since 2008. Before, he directed the Department of Social Policy and Labour Markets at the Ifo Institute of Economic Research in Munich. In 2007 he was a guest professor at Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo. He received his PhD and, later on, his Habilitation in economics from the University of Passau.
His main research interests are issues in public finance and social protection, especially in the fields of old-age provision and family policies; he also works on population economics, especially fertility and migration, and on labour economics. He is a regular consultant of the German Federal Ministry of Finance and the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women, and Youth. Since 2000, he has been a fellow of the CESifo Research Network, and, since 2013, a member of the Academy of Science and Literature in Mainz.
