Silvia Maja Melzer is currently deputizing the professorship for Social Inequality and Social Structure Analysis at the Bielefeld University and codirecting the German Research Foundation project “Organizational Inequalities and Interdependencies between Capabilities in Work and Personal Life: A Study of Employees in Different Work Organizations”. Since 2015, she has also been working as the country lead investigator for Germany within the Comparative Organizational Inequality Network (COIN), which investigates organizational earnings inequalities across 14 countries using Linked-employer-employee panel data.
Melzer’s research covers a wide range of topics. Her previous research asks, e.g., how different labor market conditions in East and West Germany influence individual and couples’ decisions on regional mobility and mobility outcomes. Her latest work focuses on the role of work organizations (or firms) in the genesis of social inequalities at the labor market, asking how work organizations and their characteristics create, mute or exaggerate, social inequalities.
