Special Collection 13
Spatial Demography
Published 13 February 2013
This Special Collection—edited by Stephen A. Matthews—focuses on the utilization of geospatial data and application of spatial analytical tools to examine demographic and health related questions: including teenage pregnancy, child mortality, segregation and health, migration and rural livelihoods, simulation of population distributions across diverse contexts, and demography and crime. This Special Collection starts with an introductory paper focusing on specific spatial analytic methods and how they have been and can be used to inform demographic research. It also discusses future challenges for demographers as changes in data, technology and methods will likely change the way demographers think about the relationship between people and place, how they collect, and how they analyze their data. All other manuscripts in this Special Collection were prepared by participants of a spatial analysis training program based on summer workshops (held 2008-2011). The workshop series was supported by a grant from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) – R25 HD057002.
